Remembering Laurence John (Larry) Davies

We are deeply saddened by the news of former Community Rail Officer Laurence John (Larry) Davies’s passing.

Philip Evans, in paying tribute to Larry Davies referred to the high regard in which Larry was held by railway people – both professional and amateur – for his knowledge, enthusiasm and for the many illustrated talks he gave on transport subjects throughout the area. He had been a noted regular photographic contributor to railway journals and on-line forums.

I first really got to know Larry during his time as Divisional Police Commander at Llandudno when I was Licensing Chairman.  Our shared interest in railways soon became apparent and the friendship developed.  After his retirement from North Wales Police a second career beckoned as Community Rail Officer for Conwy Valley from 2002 – one for which Larry was ideally suited. I joined the Partnership shortly after his appointed and it was a pleasure to work with him on the many initiatives he introduced.  Even after his retirement in 2015 he continued to take a keen interest in the Conwy Valley line and was always willing to pass on helpful suggestions.  More recently, I was able to assist Larry with some information on Conwy Station about which he was in the process of writing a history.  This station had a special affection for him as his late uncle, Trevor Jones, was the last resident Station Master from 1943 to 1956. Larry will be greatly missed by all those friends and colleagues with whom he was in contact either during his 31 years’ police service or latterly as Rail Officer.

Philip Evans, Chair of the Conwy Valley and North Wales Coast Community Rail Partnership
