Summary
Following extensive surveys and consultations undertaken by Mind Conwy to understand the needs of people experiencing mental health issues and the barriers they face; three specific groups have been identified who would benefit from additional support and activities to engage with others. These groups include Men, Women experiencing perimenopause/menopause and young people aged 18-24.
The Conwy Valley and North Wales Coast Community Rail Partnership were successful in their funding application from Avanti West Coast to work alongside Mind Conwy to provide a structured walking programme to support these three groups who are facing mental health challenges.
During the walks, the programme will integrate tailored activities to address various issues such as social anxiety, depression, isolation, loneliness, confidence, low mood and community engagement.
All walks will take place from Avanti West Coast railway stations (onward transport will be provided if required) promoting accessible transport links, travel confidence and sustainable travel.

Aims and Objectives
Improve Mental Health and Wellbeing
By providing structured walking programmes tailored to specific demographic groups experiencing mental health issues, the project can help individuals manage symptoms of anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. As well as peer support, participants will be supported by a Mental Health Practitioner or Walk Leader throughout each walk.
Promote Social Connections
The walks offer opportunities for participants to connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. By offering a safe and inclusive space where participants can connect with others who understand their challenges, the walks will help develop a sense of community, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness and strengthen social connections among participants.
Increase Physical Activity
Each group will participate in 4 walks over a 4-week period. Each walk will last a minimum of 4 hours with plenty of rest breaks built in offering opportunities for peer connection. Walks build in distance and difficulty over the course of the programme to help build confidence, fitness and ability.
Increase Resilience and Independence
Participants will experience the link between physical activity and mental health and will learn coping strategies for managing their mental health.
Break Down Stigma
Starting the walks from local railway stations will raise awareness of mental health and help to promote conversations within the local community. Providing a safe space for participants to share their experiences will help to address the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open discussions and opportunities to offer support.
Greater Connections with the Local Community
Participants get to experience what is on their doorstep, promoting greater use of community assets.
